Datai Observatory Bridge.

Langkawi, Malaysia

Design, engineering, fabrication and installation of a safe and eco-friendly observatory platforms and canopy walk bridges.

This included an initial geographic site assessment to select a tree to build the largest observatory platform around - one that would provide the best aerial views of both the surrounding mangrove forest and the Andaman Sea, as well as be able to sustain the weight and long-term use of the build. It also included design and installation of supporting bridges, staircases and infrastructure. Every component was customized and uniquely designed for the Datai’s needs.

This project was part of an extensive renovation that the Datai was undertaking to redesign their entire resort. We worked closely with the Datai team to develop a look and feel that was consistent with the transformation of their Nature Center, which was simultaneously being constructed in order to host guests and introduce them to the natural beauty of Langkawi’s rainforest and wildlife.

Now a staple of the Datai’s nature-based marketing, the new Canopy Walk has been featured in over 20 acclaimed publications and received hundreds of mentions in Trip Advisor reviews. Umgawa continues to partner with the Datai, providing infrastructure maintenance and tree care quarterly.

Habitat Adventure Course.

Penang, Malaysia

Design, engineering, fabrication and installation of a zipline adventure course.

The Habitat Penang Hill had a partially built zipline course on their property, but needed a service provider with the necessary expertise and capabilities to safely complete the project. Therefore, they partnered with Umgawa to leverage the infrastructure built to date and bring to life a safe, eco-friendly tourism attraction that would complement their existing offerings.

This included geographical site assessments, risk management strategy development, new designs, adjustments to existing construction, new construction, safety inspections, and ranger training and certification for operation of the zipline course.

Launched in 2019, The Habitat Penang Hill’s Adventure Course, known as the Flight of the Colugo, has added a new revenue stream for the organization and received international press coverage and accolades. Umgawa continues to partner with their team, providing quarterly infrastructure maintenance, safety inspections and ranger re-certification services.

Angkor Zipline Course and Tree House_umgawa adventures

Angkor Zipline Course & Tree House.

Siem Reap, Cambodia

Design, engineering, fabrication and installation of a zipline adventure course and tree house.

Originally built in the 12th century, Angkor Wat is said to be the largest religious monument in the world and considered one of the “Seven Wonders of the World.” Beginning in 2012, Umgawa lead and navigated the lengthy and cumbersome approval process to receive permits to operate inside the Archaeological Park. We were one of the first foreign companies to be successfully awarded build and operation rights in the unique, UNESCO-protected location.

We led the geographical site assessment, course design, fabrication, engineering and installation of the entire course, which includes ziplines, bridges, abseils, and a tree house. Throughout the process, we worked closely with government officials and relevant third-parties to ensure adherence to UNESCO World Heritage Site policies and the Khmer government’s religious restrictions.

The course features a  beautiful tree house offering stunning views and a chance to relax and meditate during the thrilling and exhilarating canopy adventure. It has helped drive growth and recognition for Cambodia and been recognized annually as a top attraction on Trip advisor.

Umgawa Adventures Canopy Tour.

Langkawi, Malaysia

Umgawa is an ecotourism zipline adventure. It is a multi-award winning, luxury experience that improves the Langkawi island reputation, driving recognition and economic growth.

Umgawa is not only the  island’s first world-class zipline and eco-adventure tour, but also the only jungle activity to be located in the UNESCO Geopark, a 550 million year-old conservation-protected rainforest. The course consists of 12 different ziplines, 3 suspension bridges and 1 abseil over waterfalls and the Andaman Sea. Two Sky Rangers guide each small group of nine or less, keeping guests safe, while helping them learn about the natural ecosystem through fun and educational facts and stories.

Umgawa has won dozens of acclaimed travel and tourism industry awards, been featured in over 30 local and internationally acclaimed magazines and TV shows, and has hosted visitors from over 110 countries.

This is the only attraction owned and operated by the greater Umgawa Adventures organization. For all other projects, we offer our design, build and maintenance services, while our partners retain full ownership and are the recipients of all respective profits.

““[We] went to The Datai, Langkawi….the highlight of the excursion was to cross the canopy walk which is a 20m wooden bridge suspended between giant fig trees, 15m above the forest floor.”
